Remember that once upon a time, Fingerprint sensors used to be a big deal? 2019 is here already and very soon, smartphones would be released from the most popular smartphone companies to the least popular. What should you expect to be the cutting edge? Let me enlighten you as regards the new amazing killer features that we would get in 2019 smartphones! There are still innovations to be found on the smartphone market.
The manufacturers of smartphones like Samsung, Apple, Nokia, Infinix, Gionee etc themselves do not provide any information on upcoming devices. But let’s be realistic, their timetable has become predictable. I’m an Infinix user for example and I’m quite sure that at Hot 7 is probably on the way. Other hand, leakers are now doing a great work that the PR representatives of the smartphone manufacturers have reasons to be envious!
But sincerely, it’s also quite predictable what features the 2019 smartphones will have: they will be wrapped in fragile material front and back, which can only be repaired at great expense. After all, we’re almost at the point of realizing a trend that is awaited with enthusiasm: the displays become completely bezel-less ; is there’s no space under or above the screen at the front ; the screen covers the entire front display, as seen in the iPhone X. But what other features should we expect? Read on!
Most Likely Features in 2019 Smartphones
Foldable/ Flexible Displays
Another potential unique selling point could be flexible or at least artistically curved smartphone displays. The trend that the Galaxy Note Edge and the LG G5 wanted to initiate could reach the next level. At least, before the end of 2018, I heard the plan of the Samsung Galaxy X would be a foldable phone. However, I still don’t know the name of the actual phone… it might be the Galaxy X or it might be the Galaxy F… or it might be something else altogether. Samsung calls its foldable phone technology the Infinity Flex Display (I bet many smartphones may use this technology soon), and the phone itself has a tablet-sized screen that can be folded up to fit into a pocket.
Arguably, the biggest name of smartphone makers besides Samsung when it comes to foldable device rumours is is Apple – and from what we can tell, the hardware might be really close to being fully realised. According to analysts, Apple is going to wait until 2020 to release a foldable phone – and it might well have 5G on board too. I noticed that Apple doesn’t always rush in with new tech trends anyways, so 2020 sounds about right, even if it’s behind the rest. But, get ready to spend a lot of money!! Here’s a teaser picture:
Apart from Samsung, Motorola has been working on a promising invention. From the noises that Motorola has been making, it’s not going to be far behind Samsung with a foldable phone, and apparently it’s also going to carry the iconic Motorola Razr branding. It’s going to be a flip phone then, but with a full foldable screen inside when you open it up.
LG too, isn’t slacking! They have created a working foldable mobile screen whose design is shown below.
Confusingly, different names like Flex, Foldi and Duplex have been mentioned in internal LG documents. As for the final design, or the final price, we’re still in the dark – it’s going to be expensive, but LG has promised not to rush the device to market before it’s ready, so a late 2019 launch could be possible. Last October, CEO of Huawei, Richard Yu, confirmed that the Chinese maker already had a working prototype of a flexible smartphone, and then in March of this year patent diagrams of a foldable Huawei phone were released.
Going Bezel-less, Design And Camera
Too many 2019 smartphones leaks raised hopes for perfectly bezel-less displays, most of which remained unfulfilled in 2018. But, the fingerprint sensor has already disappeared behind the display on some devices. Xiaomi has actually demonstrated that you can hide the selfie cam without having to use the notch with the slider mechanism in the Mi MIX 3. Samsung has a different solution in the form of the Infinity O display and the camera hole on the Galaxy A8s. But a problem may have failed to solve is hiding a camera below the display. Many smartphone makers have tried , but all they have gotten so far are poor lab results with blurry or dark selfies. But I’m optimistic that Samsung would find a solution to that soon and 2019 smartphones would be better.
The front display notch wasn’t something phone makers gave much thought to before the iPhone X arrived in 2017, but now it’s everywhere; Infinix hot 6s, Tecno, Nokia 6.1 etc are now creating smartphones with the iPhone X design. We should expect this as one of the most likely features in 2019 smartphones.
As regarding Camera quality, we see a steady evolution last year. First came the dual-lens camera, then we had the triple-lens camera, then the quad-lens camera, and this year 2019, we could even see it go way beyond that. LG has been spotted patenting a camera with 16 lenses – a hexa-lens camera – it seems likely that the major players are going to keep adding lenses on the back of their phones until there’s no more room left! Wow
Where do all these extra lenses get us? Well, they make up for the lack of physical depth in smartphone camera technology, adding features like optical zoom, background smoothing, anti-shake measures and better HDR reproduction by combining the data from several lenses rather than just one to 201 smartphones.

Faster Internet With 5G
You may still be struggling to get 4G or LTE speeds in your part of the world, but 5G is coming whether you’re ready for it or not.
A consortium of chip fabricators and phone manufacturers has been planning to make 2019 the year in which 5G will be properly integrated into smartphones for the first time. Qualcomm, who designs and sells the modems used in most phones, has indicated that they will have a consumer-level chip available in large numbers to facilitate this rollout. 5G, which will be a substantial upgrade over existing 4G networks, will potentially offer speeds one thousand times faster with latency speeds of less then one millisecond! Users could see downloads running at over 10 Gigabytes per second, allowing movies to be sent to your device in seconds. It should be noted that even if new smartphones contain 5G chips, it will take time for the necessary and expensive network upgrades to be performed, meaning these speeds may not be widely available until 2020.
Artificial Intelligence Features (AI)
AI is already playing a major role in flagship smartphones.
High-end phone processor chips now have dedicated components for artificial intelligence calculations. That means they can handle tasks specifically suited for machine learning, from being able to recognize a dog and a cat in a photo, to being able to tell your voice from anyone else’s.
That means a phone doesn’t have to upload these kind of recognition tasks to the cloud, thus you won’t need Internet all the time for the results you would need Internet for as at today. And so, you get your results quicker and the device responds instantly.
As we move through 2019, expect that role to get bigger and bigger – the premium handsets of 2019 will be able to do more than ever before without your help. I’m not talking about just the ‘Okay Google, set up a reminder for 12’ or ‘Siri, show me the nearest restaurant’ you know. I’m talking about your phone doing more with your little input. There’ll be a host of improvements on the software side too of course, as Google Assistant, Siri, Bixby and the others continue to get smarter. Actually, we wouldn’t be surprised in some of the most exciting smartphone innovations of 2019 happen on the software rather than the hardware side. And oh, about Fuschia OS, I’m intentionally keeping silent about it now till I get a render or a tangible demo comes out- its going to be exciting!
And finally for this post, I’m going to be talking about…
Fully Waterproof Phones
In recent years, a number of manufacturers have made advancements in increasing the protection offered by smartphones against water damage. This is becoming increasingly necessary for premium flagship phones as the price has increased sharply over the last few generations. Most high-end phones offer some level of water-resistance, which means they will survive brief exposure to liquids. Now manufacturers seek to make the phones entirely waterproof. This will involve careful engineering of the charging port and the grilles used for the speaker and microphone. It is not a simple task to make these ports functional but also keep out any liquids. This is one of the most-requested features from customers, as anyone who has fallen into a pool with a phone in their pocket knows. My phone fell into my bathroom sink last month, and the only reason why I can use it today is that I fix phones. Else, few hours with or without the popular rice solution would suffice to fry my motherboard!
